Animals have been a big part of my life ever since I can remember. If things might have been constrained due to a lack of money, like we couldn't afford a place with two bathrooms, at least we always made room for a cat.

For many years my husband and I had one cat. That was Samantha. She'd come to us as a very young cat, but she had already been passed from one family to another until she came to us, her fifth family. She was neurotic as anything. She ripped up a chair. She clawed the edges off of a bunch of books. She peed in my houseplants. But, we had bonded with her and a promise had been made. It took exactly one year for her to stop with the bad behavior and settle in to be a loving part of the family. We still had the clawed chair, but she'd been forgiven. That cat moved with us to eight other locations as we moved around.

We lost her for a period of 3 days when we'd brought her back to the United States from Germany. Her paperwork hadn't been with her on the airplane and customs had her while they waited for it to catch up. Then, when they finally found her after many, many phone calls from us, we stayed with my husband's parents for a month or so. We were very grateful to have a place to stay, but it was temporary.

We moved into a tiny little place that wasn't in the best of all neighborhoods for a couple of months as we waited for a place in graduate housing to open up at the University of Maryland. We weren't able to keep her there and a generous student in the German department offered to keep Sam for us. It was supposed to be a permanent move. I found out later that Sam had been relegated to the basement because their boss cat ruled the roost upstairs. Sam didn't like it and proceeded to begin the process of shredding their books. I'd felt terrible about giving her away after we'd gone through so much to keep her in the first place. As luck would have it we got a call that we could move into graduate housing. They also didn't allow pets, but as soon as we moved in I began seeing cats sitting in windows and folks walking dogs occasionally.

When Sam's new adoptive mother told us to either come and get Sam or she was going to the pound I jumped at the chance to re-rescue my cat. She sat in the window of our little apartment watching the world go by for the year and a half we stayed there.

Then, we moved to Southern California and stayed with my mother in Coronado. That was the first time Sam got to be with another cat and two dogs. Kitty, Goldie, Sadie and Sam. They got along famously. We moved to our own place eventually and years later we moved to Northern California. First we lived in Dublin and after a year and half moved to the place we're at now in Oakland. We had Goldie, my mother's Yorkshire terrier, and Sadie, her Golden Retriever, for a few years while Mom was out of country with my dad. Those were wonderful days. When the doggies went back to be with Mom and Dad our house was very, very quiet. Sam had entered into her elderly years, but she seemed depressed. She was quiet, she just sat around all day and didn't seem to be interested in much at all. That's when I got her Molly. Molly was a tiny little kitten who with her brothers and sisters was at the vets looking for families. Their mother had been killed. I brought Molly home. Sam immediately became interested and the two cats formed a life-long friendship. Molly taught Sam how to purr again.

This is where we finally let our roots down and we've been here for pretty close to twenty years. Sam passed away years ago, but she lived to be a very old cat. She's got a name sake now in our family who looks just like she did.

Sam the cat is a very good friend of mine.

Escape to Chimp Eden
In South Africa, there's a sanctuary for chimpanzees rescued from the horrors of human captivity — physical abuse, malnutrition, abandonment and drug and alcohol abuse. Now, for the first time ever, these chimps find a community and sanctuary at the hands of conservationist Eugene Cussons, South African rescue director at the Jane Goodall Institute's Chimpanzee Eden. Here, the chimps finally experience safety, nurturing and a loving environment — all necessary conditions for them to become healthy, rehabilitated primates poised for the return to the wild. In a bittersweet, hope-lined series about chimp rescue and rehabilitation, Animal Planet's Escape to Chimp Eden premieres Friday, February 8, 2008 at 9:30 PM (ET/PT) on Animal Planet.

Something I Saw While Surfing

My wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to our six-year-old daughter and said, "Would you like to say the blessing?" I wouldn't know what to say," she replied. "Just say what you hear Mommy say," my wife said. Our daughter bowed her head and said: "Dear Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?"
