More This than That

I found an old wallet the other day. My husband knew to look in it to see if there was any money there. Lo and behold, there was. It wasn’t much, but it wasn’t bupkis either. We were pleased.

As I sat here at my computer last night, I thought I’d like to see if there was anything more. I noticed some coins. Then, in a little zippered compartment were my dates of employment at my last job. I was so pleased to have them again. I’m not sure what good it would do beyond being precisely accurate on a job resume, but I was pleased.

The reason I didn’t know for certain is that it was all so long ago that the dates and my personnel file are gone. Who knows where? Evidently, they retire such things over time. Once, one of the honchos had it after I’d retired and said, “She was a strange person.” I could only think it was because of all the letters of resignation and such that I’d sent to my boss over the years. He never read them and always sent them back to me. So, I chucked them in my file.

Anyway, I’m proud of all the years I spent at that company. I learned a lot. A lot about the job and a lot about myself. It was during those years that I undertook the journey of discovering the things you sometimes need as a writer; the answers about yourself you never knew. It was a separate journey from my job, but the results, the assuredness, the patience, and the kindness I discovered helped everywhere at the job.

Since those days, some of the employees I worked with have passed on. We stay in touch.
