I once wrote
a book about young people finding their first jobs. I thought it was going to
be one book. It ended up stretching into three books: How to Get a Job, How to
Keep Your Job, and How to Find Another Job.
If I were to
publish the series, I’d need to do a complete revamp, because when I wrote it,
AI wasn't really all that present in our lives. At least, we didn’t recognize
it. Also, I don’t know much about AI in the workplace. So, I’d need to find out
about that. Something to ask ChatGPT about.
I have a
paid subscription to ChatGPT.com. It’s $20 a month, but the free version is the
same program, just less of it. I never use Chat to write what I publish. I go
there to bounce ideas around. You name it, and I’ve asked. Anything from
recipes, learning languages, developing crochet patterns, to setting up my websites with less fuss and muss
than the old-fashioned way. I asked today how a person in the workplace would
use AI.
It told me folks
using AI in the workplace might use it to write more professional emails, plan
projects, and do all sorts of things.
I shared
something that happened to me when I was 19 or 20, working at my first job. I
was a store clerk in an Army convenience store in Germany. The store was very
much like a 7-11. Basic food items, magazines, household items, and a few clothes.
I hadn’t been there for very long, and one of my co-workers came up to me. She
pinched my arm and pulled me in close, whispering, “Stop working so hard. You’re
making us look bad.” I was shocked. I didn’t know what to do. I asked AI if
this might be something somebody could ask them about, and AI responded that it
was. I remember at the time I didn’t feel like I could ask anybody what it
meant. Now, yes, somebody could go to AI and ask. It would have been helpful at
the time because it did upset me a lot.
I have seen
advertisements about all the AI apps out there, and how it is necessary to use them; you might not get or keep your job. I don’t
know about that and think it is extreme, though I also haven’t been in the job
market for some years. So, I don’t know for certain.
I also know
that many folks really exaggerate what they have to offer in order to get
customers, so much of what I hear advertised could be that as well. Fear and
greed sell. Who am I to argue with that? It works.
I am
reminded of when I was much younger, and there were so many books aimed at my
age group that guaranteed popularity if you read them. None of them ever worked
for me. Not a one. I was just very timid and shy and didn’t grow out of that
until I started drinking. Not what any of those authors had in mind, I think.
But that’s my story. Of course, when you think about it, I think books on dieting are the same.
I think one
of the most valuable things to learn about work is simple. Show up on time.
Others are:
Be honest. If
you don’t know how to do something, you should always say you can learn. That
was enough for my boss to hear from me. I have a feeling a lot of people just
told them they knew how to do stuff, then got someone else to do it for them.
Don’t sneak.
Don’t cut corners.
Don’t take
personal calls during the day. You should tell the people in your life that you
will return any calls they make to you when you aren’t working. Even before
cell phones entered our lives, it looked really bad for an employee to be doing
something other than work while on the job. Crossword puzzles? Sketching?
Writing personal letters? Filing your nails? Right, all that belongs to
personal time. An exception would be for a parent who needs to be available to
take calls from their kid’s school. If you have to make a personal call, just
keep it short.
Don’t call
in sick when you are not sick, especially if you’ve been partying all weekend.
Once you start doing that, you are not going to stop. It will become a habit,
and although you might think you’re smart, you are not going to get away with
it. My boss used to give people the benefit of the doubt. We used to say he
gave you just enough rope to hang yourself, because when it was discovered that
you were doing drugs or were a drunk, or even that you had a second job that interfered
with the one at our company, that other shoe dropped pretty hard. People notice
stuff. Just saying.
Something
else I just thought of: Don’t make things more complicated than they need to
be. Maybe I’ve done that with those three books. I don’t know. I think the
basics still apply.
Although
none of this has to do with the spiritual or the woo-woo side of life, it’s
still important in people’s lives. It was important to me.
Blessings to everyone. Write on!
