Does your life’s work matter? I would think it does. What if you aren’t famous? I don’t think that matters.
There is a metaphysical idea I hold close to my heart.
Whatever it is that you have to say will reach the ears of whoever it is
important to. It’s a twist on the adage: When the student is ready, the teacher
will appear. Which also works the other way around: when the teacher is ready,
the student will appear.
I’m of the opinion, too, that we spend an inordinate amount
of time worrying about things in our lives. I know I have. First off, there is
so much out there clamoring for our attention. People writing the news want to
get a jump on other publications so that they can be the first to warn of calamity.
The ratings and, consequently, the advertisers are important. Same thing with
influencers. They want your number. They want to make a living off of your
attention. Spend your money on something else. It’s your time and your
attention.
They are not in charge of you. You are in charge of
yourself.
My father-in-law once said something important to my
husband, Dennis. Pete said, “Pick something and be good at it.” That advice is
just as true now as it was 50 years ago. In other words, be the commanding
presence in your life. You are in charge. Don’t mold yourself to fit into the
slots. Make the slots fit you.
So, do what your heart feels good about. If you need to put
bread on the table, well, then take a job. You will always be able to learn
good things from it, but you will also be able to feel good about how you spend
your spare time.
I can remember for years that I was angry that my job took
me away from what I wanted to do. I had to learn to make my own time to write.
I would wake up a couple of hours early and write in the morning, or I would
write at night after I’d gotten home. So, I made a place for my heart’s desire
where there was no time, or at least it didn’t seem like there was time before.
But something interesting happened along the way. I learned
to be happy in my job. The job never changed. I did. If I could do it, I know you can too.
Thanks for reading. Try to do one fun thing for yourself
today.
