A Happy Accident

If you are here, you’re here for a reason. That is part of what you do when you commit to a path of a spiritual nature. You say, “I’m going to do this, now.” Okay, so say you are 21 years old. Maybe you’ve graduated from college with a degree in something, but it’s not something you are really committed to. You don’t have to be. As you will learn, the older you get, the more options you have.

When my husband got his degree in German, he moved to Germany (with his first wife) to become fluent in the language. He did not have a job that used his German, but in these years after college, the idea was to become fluent. By the time I met him, his wife had gone, he had thrown his wedding ring into the Isar River, and he had lots of German friends.

Eventually, we married as we had hit it off right away. Shortly before we married, he got a job teaching German to newly arrived American Army soldiers. There were two classes. One for enlisted personnel, which was 20 hours in language instruction and 20 hours with practical knowledge of this new country. They would take a trip into town, order beer, use a telephone, learn how to read the bus and train schedules, and just get comfortable living in a new country. Because my husband, while he was an enlisted soldier as a translator of Romanian and German for newly arrived people from Romania, could relate to these enlisted soldiers, he was very popular.

The other class was for officers. It too was a 40-hour class, except it was all about learning the language. They found out that Dennis and the enlisted soldiers had a grand time on the 20 hours spent on the economy, as we called it, they wanted to do that too. Dennis was all about exploring the countryside, going to churches and castles, and just roaming around. He felt his interest would dovetail nicely with this request for a field trip. So, there began his trips with the officers. These also would show how to order in a restaurant, how to place your cutlery just so on your dinner plate to indicate the meal was good, and a bit of a history lesson, which was his forte. Word spread. The spouses (mostly wives) wanted in on the entertainment, and eventually, a tour business was born.

As the years went on, not too many, he got a call from somebody at the University of Maryland, European Division in Heidelberg which was a couple of hours away from where we lived in Stuttgart. The University of Maryland had a two-year campus in Munich specifically for the children of active-duty military and embassy personnel stationed in Europe. It kept the kids closer to home than if they were on their own Stateside. That’s what I was doing when I met Dennis in Munich. The school has since closed, but McGraw Kaserne was handed back to the Germans and is still being used to house immigrants from other countries.

Also, the University of Maryland offers lunch and evening classes leading to college degrees for active-duty military and their dependents, scattered across Europe and Asia on four continents.

I went with Dennis to his meeting in Heidelberg. He sat across the desk. We had no idea why he had been invited to talk. The person on the other side of the desk slid a book across the desk to Dennis and said, “Your first class is tonight at Kelly Barracks.” And that’s how it started. We lived in Stuttgart for another three or four years while Dennis began teaching college courses for the University of Maryland. He did not have the master’s degree required of the other teachers. It was his students in the Gateway program who had recommended him. We never found out who it was.

We figured one of his students might have said something. What was neat about where we lived was that it was top-heavy with brass. That means there were many higher-ranking officers there. I can remember walking around the post where my family was living and seeing a private. It was like bird watching. You mostly saw generals dripping with medals and all the trimmings higher-ranking officers had. But, to see a private? That was a novelty. Also, we had members from five services represented at Patch Barracks. It was the USEUCOM – United States European Command, and you’d see Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard walking around.

Eventually, we returned to the United States. Because of that pesky requirement of a master’s degree for teachers at the University of Maryland European Division, Dennis had never been able to teach the higher-level German language classes. He had the curriculum for levels One and Two memorized but was never able to teach the upper-level classes. So, we returned Stateside so he could go back to school at the University of Maryland in College Park to earn his master's and his doctorate.

Going to graduate school is a stress-filled existence. He did earn his master’s degree in German, but we decided not to continue with the doctorate. Instead, nine years into our marriage, we moved to California and started a new life. He was unable to find a job teaching German there. Most people wanted to learn Spanish at the time. One thing led to another, and he got a job teaching folks to pass the state’s insurance licensing exam. Nothing could be further away from learning German, with that job, but it was a job.

One thing led to another, and eventually he passed the licensing exams for the insurance license and the Series 7 and 63 exams for a stockbroker’s license in California. It was a living, but it was 100 times more stressful than earning a doctorate in German.

Then, he broke his back. He came that close to never walking again, and now, many years later, he is two inches shorter and is a writer and an historian. Again, the jobs fell into his lap. It was as if the universe knew he was ready.

My own life as a psychic channel has been similar. I fell into the books and the people I needed to know for this happy accident to happen. We celebrate our 50th anniversary this year. Who would have thought?

Have the dream and then follow it wherever it takes you.

And thanks for reading. I’ve listed a few places where I am on the internet below. Check out the last link to see what resources I recommend if you’d like to learn how to channel, too.
