Sometimes I fancy myself an expert. On
what, you might ask? Well, I suppose on keeping one’s spirits up. Oh, there was
a really rude gesture from Spirit just now. This is not comedy. I will not have
it.
Never mind.
Okay, well, if you’re thinking comedy,
then perhaps I might give it a try.
I actually did write something the other
day that was comedic in nature. I have recently begun writing on Vocal.Media and I chanced
to see one of their writing challenges. Evidently, that’s where you make your
money. Yes, like at Medium, you can get paid for the reads you get on your
articles, but like Medium, Vocal.Media pays about bupkis for reads. It was
mentioned that a better way to make money on Vocal.Media is to make it a
practice to sign up for challenges. As luck would have it, the first challenge
I looked at was due to expire a few hours hence, so I wrote quickly, and with
verve, I might say. The link to the story of comedic apology is here.
Tell me if you like it.
So far on Vocal.Media, I’ve made 8¢, but
then I’ve only submitted a handful of stories. I make about the same amount of
money on Medium. Vocal.Media says you can withdraw your funds when you’ve
accumulated $15. Medium pays once you’ve made $10. However, Vocal Media gave me
a $10 signup bonus when I paid for a year’s membership, so I’ve only got $4.92
to go.
This is when they tell the writer not to
quit their day job.
So, if you are interested, they offer a
free plan to post your stories, or you can pay $99 for a year and be a Vocal+
member. Those who elect to go that route also have a stab at the contests. I
believe the grand prize for the one I entered is $200, with lesser prizes of
$50 and $10. Who knows? I might be able to recoup some of what I paid for the
program.
It is the first time I have ever
submitted something I wrote to a contest. I’ve got to tell you I was excited.
There are categories at the time you publish
where you decide where your story will shine forth most brightly.
Unfortunately, I haven’t found a place for the woo-woo in life, which is where
I would feel most comfortable. Writers and Comedy might be the next most
favorable groups. Time will tell. These are the years when I am gathering both
the stamina and the courage to get my writing out there to the public.
If you’re reading, please leave a
comment to say hello and where you are reading from. I may be psychic, but I’m
not a mind reader.
You know, come to think of it, I used to
be rather funny. It only happened most consistently when I’d had a few. Since I
don’t drink anymore, I can only hope the funny bubbles out like farts appear to
be doing now. Have you noticed that if you’re getting on in years? Perhaps it
is a good thing I stopped going to libraries. My mother used to get the farts
in the library. She had a job there. I asked her how she did it, and she said
she’d look left and right in the stacks and then let them loose. Nobody ever
told me that was going to happen when I got old. Perhaps that was something
nobody spoke of in polite society.
Something funny about the last
paragraph? My trusty spell checker underlined farts as a misspelled word. They
suggested I use facts instead. Sorry, farts does the trick for me.
Why is bathroom humor so funny, anyway?
I always thought it was. Like when as children we’d announce we needed to go do
an exie. I didn’t know it was called anything else. Of course, it was shorthand
polite speak in my house, not to say poop, doodoo, or dump. Exie is short for excrement.
I think I was a teenager before I realized not everybody called it that.
I’m sorry I am not more well-read and
consider the basest of humor to be funny. Although, put it all in a drawing
room with a bunch of prim and proper folk, well, that is funny.
You know what we used to do for fun in
church? We’d yawn. Then, you’d hunker down and spy on all the people nearby to
see if they started yawning too. It never failed. Now, that was funny. Unless
you got caught. Then, it was not funny.
…Time passes, and it’s been a day since
I wrote on this story. I’ve decided that I cannot force funny. Actually, if I
think back to when I first wanted to channel, I remember that I could not force
that. I could pretend what it was like with the Ouija Board, which was where I
first made contact with Spirit. I’d drag my hand around while it rested on the
planchette. Just to see what it might feel like to experience that. It took me
months for anything to happen. I was so frustrated that, as hard as I was
trying to channel, nothing was happening.
Until I relaxed.
Until I gave it up.
Until I stopped trying.
Maybe I should try that with being funny.
I know I enjoy humor. I know I can be funny sometimes. Maybe I should just stop
trying to be funny, and that’s when it will happen.
What do you think?
Is being funny a talent or is it
something you can learn?
Thanks for reading. Tell me where you’re
from.
