What If She Never Really Died?

I’m thinking of a singer who was rough. Her emotions were rough, her life was rough. She wasn’t afraid back in the day when I was. She was gutsy, and she didn’t care what you thought. She used to back when she was younger, just like I had for years, but she’d grown up by the time I met her.

It all took a toll on her. Drink will do that. Drugs, too, and when you mix them? Ah, that’s bad news.

But, Lord, can you roll on with it. For a person who is unused to freedom, it can be overwhelming.

I didn’t know about her for very long before she passed on. But now? I listen as often as I can. I allow the music to come my way, the same way I expect anything magical to come.

And, once, somebody said I sounded like her when I sang too. I had no idea. I still don’t. But that’s what they said.

All this time, I haven’t said her name. Can you guess? It’s Janis Joplin. When I learned she was an Army Brat, all sorts of kinship vibes began to ring for me. Army Brats the world over feel something of the same thing. People who roam, who never had permanent homes, but who were afraid of nothing and rarely fit in. And even though I was afraid, it turned out later in life that I realized I wasn’t afraid at all.

Would you like to say something?

Sure.

Like what?

Just look at you waiting with bated breath. I’m not a singer like I was. Don’t get me wrong, I still like to hum them, I’ll sing at the drop of a hat, but being alive, in body, was a trip. It was hard, but through the grit, the terror, the wistfulness, something nice emerged. It was just I had a hard time getting there. I know you can relate, too.

When I was growing up, my parents would talk about somebody named Gravel Gerty. They’d never heard of you, but I can remember them bringing up her name here and there. I’ve thought of your rough voice like that, too.

Yes, it is.

Do you still sound the same? Ah, I heard you chuckle.

…Back again a little while later. I looked up Gravel Gertie on Google. She was a character in the old Dick Tracy comic books.

So, whether you can talk to the spirits of celebrities and artists or just enjoy the songs they sang and the movies they were in, it’s pretty much the same thing.

For you to actually talk to a Spirit, well then, you’d need to open to your psychic abilities. If that’s what you want, then go after it. I can promise that you’ll have a good time.

Where do you start? Just ask, and somebody will pop up in your life to tell you. You say, “Isn’t that a bit simplistic?” I’ll say, “Sure, it is, and that’s what makes it fun.” For starters, you could have a look at my Resources page here at Talking to Spirit. It’s full of people, books, and sometimes movies that influenced me and eventually led me to a psychic life.

Thanks for reading. Have fun, and when you think of a singer or movie star you used to love? Know that they are aware of it.

Thanks for reading, and come back for more. I publish here at Talking to Spirit twice a week, usually on Sundays and on Tuesdays.
